abstract

background: desalination plants have an important role in providing community drinking water. the increasing trend of water consumption and decrease of natural resources of fresh water make this role even more important. the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of inlet and outlet water of desalination plants by reverse osmosis (ro) process in qeshm, iran and also to compare the quality of outlet water from this process with national and international standards of drinking water. methods: this study was performed by obtaining samples of inlet and outlet water of desalination plants working by reverse osmosis (ro) process in qeshm for 7 months. total hardness, electrical conductivity (ec), total dissolved solids (tds), turbidity, temperature, ph, fluoride, nitrate, nitrite, chloride, sulfate and microbiological parameters were investigated. data analysis was performed by spss16. results: total hardness and fluoride in the treated water from this process were lower than desirable limits and chloride concentration was higher than the permitted limit. the rest of the chemical and physical parameters were in acceptable range. most qualitative parameters of the outlet water of the ro process decreased by 99% compared to the inlet water and outlet levels were in the standard range. conclusion: desalination plants by reverse osmosis (ro) process have a high efficiency in providing healthy drinking water based on qualitative standards.

Effects of Raw Water Quality on the Efficiency of Domestic Reverse Osmosis Apparatus in Khuzestan Province

The aim of this study was the effect of raw water quality on the efficiency of domestic reverse osmosis apparatus in Khuzestan province. The results showed that the purified water quality was related to the quality of entrance raw water. With increasing in salt concentrations (EC) or TDS, purification efficiency was decreased. The cation and anions content of refinery water was related to TDS a...

Performance Study of Reverse Osmosis Plants for Water Desalination in Bandar-Lengeh, Iran

Introduction: Reverse osmosis (RO) is best known for its use in desalination (removing the salt from seawater to get fresh water), but since the early 1970s it has also been used to purify fresh water for medical, industrial, and domestic applications. The aim of this research was the performance study of reverse osmosis plants for water desalination in Bandar-Lengeh, Iran. Materials and Meth...

Research Progress of Brackish Water Desalination by Reverse Osmosis

Brackish water (BW) desalination is a primary path to relieve the shortage of water. As one of the BW desalination methods, reverse osmosis (RO) technology has advantage for both technology and process procedure. The expounding of this research studied or reviewed recent years, reverse osmosis membrane, energy recovery, new energy and application technology in BW desalination of RO at home and ...

Power and Fresh Water Production by Solar Energy, Fuel Cell, and Reverse Osmosis Desalination

This paper presents sizing, energy management strategy, and cost analysis for a configuration consisting of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, fuel cell (FC) storage system, and reverse osmosis (RO) desalination technology for combined power and fresh water production. In this system, PV is the main power supply source; fuel cell is a storage system accompanied by Hydrogen production and storage d...

Seawater Desalination by using Nanofiltration (NF) and Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) Membranes in Sequential Mode of Operation

In this study, the applicability of nanofiltration (NF) membranes as a pretreatment prior to reverse osmosis (RO) in seawater desalination was investigated. The membranes used wereNF270 and NF90 as the NF membranes, while the brackish water (BW) RO membrane BW30 was used as the RO membrane. In desalination tests, permeates of the NF membraneswere collected and used as the feed to th...
